aql CEO joins UK5G advisory board
aql founder and CEO Prof. Adam Beaumont has joined the advisory board of UK5G, a new industry body responsible for supporting the UK in becoming a global leader in the development and uptake of 5G.
UK5G’s mission involves enabling collaboration between industry, researchers, the public sector, entrepreneurs, innovators and end users; sharing knowledge; identifying opportunities, challenges and barriers to adoption; and working with Government to support inward and outward investment opportunities.
In this role, Beaumont will provide advice, guidance and support for the aims and goals of the innovation network as well as providing impartial, industry-focused advice to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on its future plans for 5G.
aql is currently building the supporting engineering that will enable next generation connectivity, including 5G, for the people and businesses of Leeds and unlock all kinds of innovation, such as self-driving cars, delivery drones and a secure internet of things. The platform will then be rolled out across the country.
“aql has always been a technology company that builds platforms for innovation, and we’ve enabled and built communications products that have supported the growth of some of the largest global scales-ups. What we see now is an opportunity to build infrastructure to enable the next wave of innovation in autonomous vehicles and systems,” said Beaumont, who is also spearheading Leeds’ bid to become one of the UK’s first 5G test cities. “Everybody is excited about all of the tech applications, but we are excited about building the silent tech behind the scenes to make this happen.”
Ian Smith, the 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme Director of the DCMS, added: “The Government are determined that the UK be a world-leader in 5G and that we provide reliable, high-speed connectivity to our towns, cities and rural areas. We are rightly very excited about what UK5G can do for the growing 5G ecosystem in the UK, to help make that vision a reality. I’m delighted to endorse UK5G’s very impressive advisory board membership and look forward to working closely with them as we develop future plans for the 5G Programme.”
